Internship
As a UGA student, I had the opportunity to intern with Orthopedic Surgeon, Dr. Steven Niergarth. During this experience, I was able to work with him in the office as well as the operating room as he performed various surgeries. While in the office, I assisted and prepped patients for injections, castings, fluid aspirations, etc. I was also given the task of operating the ultrasound machine and demonstrating multiple exercises for pre- and post-surgery patients. Additionally, I helped evaluate patients and access their injuries. For some of the offices most common injuries, I created educational brochures, infographics, and other documents that the patients were able to take home. On surgery days, I supported Dr. Niergarth and the nursing staff as they prepared for surgery, prepped the patient, performed the surgery, and got the patient ready to move to recovery. I also helped clean and wrap injection sites. This experience allowed me to learn a great deal about the medical field, insurance polices, workers' comp, and so much more.
